POV: you're climbing a narrow alley in Naksan Park, Seoul, wondering why your legs hurt so much, and then BOOM π₯ β a giant fish mural appears out of nowhere on a random wall and you literally forget you were tired. That's exactly what happened to me when my eonni (μΈλ, older sister) dragged me to μ΄νλ (Ihwa-dong, Ihwa Village) last spring and omg it changed my life bestie. No cap.
So What Even IS Ihwa Mural Village? ποΈ
Okay so real talk β μ΄ν λ§μ (Ihwa maeul, Ihwa Village) is this super charming hillside neighborhood right at the base of Naksan Mountain, literally a 10-minute walk from Hyehwa Station (ννμ, Line 4). Back in 2006, the Seoul Metropolitan Government started this whole public art project called the Naksan Project and basically invited artists to transform the walls of this old residential area into an open-air gallery. And it worked?? Like insanely well?? The whole vibe is this magical mix of ν λ¨Έλ (halmoni, grandma) vibes and modern street art and it hits different every single time.
The most famous piece is the Fish Mural (λ¬Όκ³ κΈ° λ²½ν) β these two giant carp swimming up the steep stone steps as if the whole alley is a river. Lowkey iconic. There's also the Flower Staircase (κ½κ³λ¨) where every step is painted with flowers in all these pastel colors, and I've taken approximately 847 photos there no shame. The murals change over time too β some get repainted, new artists add new pieces β so every visit actually feels a little different. My friend went twice in six months and said it felt like a whole new place!!
How to Actually Experience It Like a Local πΊοΈ
Okay here's where I give you the real insider tips because most tourists just speed-walk through and miss everything. First of all β go in the morning or late afternoon. The golden hour light on the murals is absolutely unreal and you'll get way better photos. Also, the village is μ§μ§ (jinjja, literally) a residential area with real people living there, so please be respectful and keep your voice down!! My mom always says λμΉ μκ² νλν΄ (nunchi itge haengdonghe, act with awareness) and that applies here so much. Don't blast music or block people's doorways for photos. Also there's this tiny μΉ΄ν (kafe, cafΓ©) called CafΓ© Ihwa at the top of the hill and their μλ©λ¦¬μΉ΄λ Έ (Americano) with the mural view as the backdrop is literally a dream. Your Instagram will thank you.

Getting There + What to Bring π
- π Take Line 4 to Hyehwa Station (ννμ), exit 2, then walk about 15 minutes uphill
- πΈ Bring your camera!! The murals are meant to be photographed
- π Wear comfy shoes β the alleys are steep and uneven (I wore heels once, never again π)
- π Budget at least 1.5β2 hours to wander properly
- π° It's totally FREE to visit which is wild considering how beautiful it is
- πΈ Spring (AprilβMay) is peak gorgeous season when actual flowers bloom alongside the painted ones
The best part about Ihwa Mural Village is that it's still pretty νμ ν (hanjeokhan, quiet and uncrowded) compared to places like Insadong or Hongdae. Like yeah it's in travel blogs now but it still feels genuinely local and special. I still feel a little flutter every time I turn a corner and see a mural I haven't noticed before. Seoul is full of hidden gems like this and that's honestly why I love this city so so much!! π
β¨ Fun Fact: The famous Fish Mural (λ¬Όκ³ κΈ° λ²½ν) was actually almost demolished in 2006 when residents were annoyed by tourists coming at night with flashlights to see the fish, which were designed to glow! The original artist worked with the community to keep the mural but agreed to remove the glow-in-the-dark paint. The fish you see today is the peaceful, non-glowing version!
π‘ Pro Tip: Combine Ihwa Mural Village with nearby Naksan Park (λμ°κ³΅μ) for insane panoramic views of Seoul's old city walls and downtown skyline β it's a 5-minute walk from the top of the village and completely worth the extra climb. Pack a νΈμμ (pyeonuijeom, convenience store) snack from the GS25 near Hyehwa Station and have a little νΌν¬λ (picnic) moment up there. This is literally my perfect Seoul day fr fr!! π
